Miami Valley AIDS walk to include a ride this year
Dayton-Lace up your walking shoes and adjust your bike helmets, it's almost time! On Saturday, September 26 beginning with a 9:30 am registration, AIDS Foundation Miami Valley will sponsor its fourth annual Walk and Ride for AIDS, a benefit event that supports people living with HIV and AIDS.
The foundation also provides prevention and education programs in the 13 county Miami Valley region. Registration will be on Courthouse Square, in downtown Dayton, where the walk and ride will step and roll off.
"It's exciting to bring a ride component
dir
to the Walk because of the event's proven success. Adding a ride to the walk will create an opportunity for more people to participate in our fight against AIDS," said Darryl Fairchild, ride coordinator and a volunteer at the Miami Valley Bicycle Council. "Our goal is to provide a safe and fun event where people can enjoy the day, friendship and working for education, prevention and support."
""
Fairchild, a paraplegic who will be riding a hand bike, is recruiting individuals who are willing to organize their family, friends, and colleagues to participate together in the Walk and Ride.

In 1997, more than 700 walkers raised nearly $87,000, a 56% increase over the previous year. This year, the foundation hopes to reach their goal of raising $100,000. All proceeds from the Walk and Ride will support programs that assist those living with HIV and AIDS, and provide funding for public awareness and education programs to prevent the spread of the disease.
The 6.2 mile (10 kiometer) walk will step off at 11:00 am. The route will take participants through downtown, along the river corridor and back to Courthouse Square. Riders will start off at 10:30 am and enjoy a 15-mile ride along the downtown bike path. Prizes will be awarded to the top three walkers and riders raising the most money, and everyone is welcome.
For more information, or to receive a registration packet, call the Walk and Ride registration phone line at 937-222-9255 or visit the web site at www.AFMV.org.
Fundraiser for judge candidates
Columbus-A fundraiser for Sandra Anderson and John Kennedy, candidates for two seats on the 10th District Court of Appeals for Franklin County, will be held on Thursday, September 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Out on Main restaurant, 122 East Main Street in Columbus.
Members and friends of the gay and lesbian community should be particularly interested in these races, because the judges on the bench are likely to be considering issues of great importance to our community.
In the past, this court has decided cases involving domestic violence between gay or lesbian partners, and it had considered the co-parent rights of a lesbian couple. Issues such as parental rights, the right to marry, employment discrimination, and other similar issues are likely to come before this court in the near future.
The two candidates, Sandra Anderson and John Kennedy, have been rated "highly recommended" by the gay and lesbian Ohio Human Rights Bar Association for their demonstrated fairness and sensitivity to our community. Sandra Anderson recently completed a term as the president of the Columbus Bar Association-the first woman to do so. She is a trial attorney at the law firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. John Kennedy, counsel to Crabbe, Brown, Jones, Potts, and Schmidt, is a member of Columbus City Council.
Kennedy introduced the Columbus city ordinance which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The host committee asks for a minimum donation of $25 to each campaign. Checks to the campaigns of Anderson and Kennedy should be made out to Committee to Elect Sandra Anderson” and “Committee to Elect John Kennedy." Hors d'oeurves and soft drinks will be provided and a cash bar will be available. For more information, please call 614-258-7777.
